Alberta has confirmed plans to establish a regulated online gaming market, following the framework Ontario pioneered in 2022. The province expects to begin accepting operator registrations in 2026, with a public launch to follow once the regulatory infrastructure is in place.

Alberta's approach will mirror Ontario's in several key ways. The provincial government will authorize a conducting and managing body (similar to iGaming Ontario) to oversee the market. Operators will need to register, meet compliance standards, and offer their products through approved platforms. Players will need to be physically located in Alberta and meet the province's age requirements to play.

The specific details of Alberta's regulatory framework are still being developed. Questions about tax rates, which operator categories will be included (poker, casino, sports betting), and what player protection requirements will look like remain open. Ontario's experience suggests these details will be finalized in the months leading up to launch.

Implications for Shared Liquidity

Alberta's entry into regulated iGaming could accelerate the shared liquidity conversation. If both Ontario and Alberta operate regulated poker markets under Canadian federal law, interprovincial player pooling becomes a natural next step. This would be simpler to implement than international agreements because both provinces fall under the same Criminal Code provisions.

For Ontario poker players, an Alberta-Ontario shared pool would increase traffic and tournament fields. It would not match the scale of connecting to global pools, but it would represent a meaningful improvement over the current ring-fenced arrangement, particularly for cash games at mid and high stakes.

Timeline Considerations

Based on Ontario's experience, expect a gap between the initial announcement and actual player-facing launch. Ontario spent roughly two years from initial planning to market opening. Alberta may move faster since it can learn from Ontario's process, but regulatory and technical setup still takes time. A realistic estimate puts the Alberta launch in late 2026 or early 2027.
