How to Use This Calculator
This tool estimates your tournament return on investment (ROI) and hourly rate based on the stats you enter. Here is how to get the most out of it:
Step 1: Select Your Room
Pick the Ontario poker room where you play most of your tournaments. Each room has different typical field sizes. GGPoker Ontario generally draws the largest fields thanks to its extensive tournament schedule and guaranteed prize pools. Smaller rooms like Bwin or PartyPoker Ontario tend to have smaller fields in the 20 to 80 player range.
Step 2: Enter Your Average Buy-in
Use your average buy-in including fees. If you mostly play $11 events but occasionally take shots at $55 tournaments, your average might be around $18 to $22.
Step 3: Set the Field Size
Use the preset buttons for quick estimates, or type an exact number. Ontario tournaments typically fall into three tiers:
- Small (20-50): Off-peak dailies, lower buy-in events on smaller rooms
- Medium (50-150): Peak-hour dailies on GGPoker and PokerStars
- Large (150-500): Weekend majors, Sunday specials, and festival events on GGPoker
Step 4: Enter Your ITM% and Average Cash
Your ITM (In The Money) rate is the percentage of tournaments where you finish in a paid position. Most online tournament structures pay the top 15% of the field. A strong player cashes 18% to 22% of the time. Your average cash amount is the mean payout across all your cashing finishes, not counting the tournaments where you bust.
Step 5: Review Your Results
The calculator outputs your ROI percentage, your effective hourly rate, and projections for monthly and yearly earnings. The chart shows your expected profit trajectory over 12 months at your current pace.
Understanding Tournament ROI in Ontario
Tournament ROI measures the percentage return on your buy-in investment over time. The formula is:
For example, if you play 100 tournaments at $22 each (investing $2,200 total) and your total cashes equal $2,640, your ROI is 20%.
Ontario's ring-fenced environment changes the dynamics compared to global sites. Smaller fields mean less variance per tournament and faster average play time. However, they also mean smaller prize pools. A $22 tournament with 80 runners has a prize pool of roughly $1,600 (after rake), compared to $22,000 for the same buy-in with 1,000 runners on a global site.
The tradeoff: Ontario tournaments are quicker to finish, which can improve your hourly rate even if individual scores are smaller. You can fit more events into a session.

Frequently Asked Questions
A solid tournament ROI in Ontario's ring-fenced market is 15% to 30% for regular players. Because field sizes are smaller than global sites (typically 20 to 300 players), variance is lower but prize pools are also smaller. Winning players who consistently cash should aim for at least 10% ROI to cover time and opportunity costs.
Ontario runs ring-fenced player pools, meaning you only play against other Ontario residents. This keeps field sizes smaller than dot-com rooms. A typical Ontario daily tournament draws 20 to 150 players, while weekend majors on GGPoker can reach 300 to 500 entries. On global sites, the same buy-in level might attract 1,000 to 5,000 players.
It depends on your skill edge and volume. Cash games offer a steadier hourly rate with lower variance. Tournaments can produce larger individual scores but come with long stretches of negative sessions. In Ontario's smaller player pools, skilled tournament players may find softer competition at certain buy-in levels, but the smaller guaranteed prize pools cap your upside compared to global sites.
You need a sample size of at least 200 to 500 tournaments before your ROI stabilizes and becomes statistically meaningful. At fewer than 100 tournaments, variance dominates and your results could be far from your true win rate. Most serious Ontario grinders play 100 to 300 tournaments per month to generate enough data.
GGPoker Ontario offers the largest tournament schedule with the biggest guaranteed prize pools and most diverse buy-in levels. PokerStars Ontario also runs a full daily schedule. 888poker and BetMGM Poker have smaller but growing tournament lineups. Check the Ontario Tournament Schedule page for current daily and weekly events across all six rooms.
