KAHNAWAKE, Quebec - Sebastien Proulx claimed his first WSOP Circuit ring on Thursday evening in the opening event of the WSOP Super Circuit Canada at the Playground Poker Club, defeating a 731-entry field to win Event #1: CA$500 NLH Super Circuit Kickoff for CA$56,000. The event, which drew a total prize pool of CA$308,445 and paid the top 111 finishers, finalized at 8:46 p.m. local time on August 27, roughly 34 hours after the first cards hit the felt on Wednesday morning. It was the first of eighteen gold rings on offer at the largest live poker tournament series ever staged on Canadian soil, and it went to a player whose most recent visits to WSOP Circuit final tables had ended without a title.
The win pushes Proulx's career recorded live tournament earnings to approximately CA$285,478, per his WSOP.com player profile. He came into the summer with three WSOP Circuit final-table appearances from the previous season, including a runner-up finish in a 1,549-entry WSOPC Colossus, and had entered the Super Circuit Canada opener as a live-cash-game regular with unfinished tournament business. He was one of two players who bagged progressive-lead stacks out of Day 1 Flight B on Wednesday night and one of five Canadians to make the final table on Thursday evening.
How the Event Played Out
The event fired across two Day 1 flights, both on Wednesday, August 26, at 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Eastern. Late registration ran through the end of Level 9 in both flights, unlimited re-entry format, with 30,000 starting chips and a 30-minute blind clock. Combined, the two flights produced 731 total entries. That is well ahead of the buy-in-and-fees math that Playground had modelled against the CA$150,000 guarantee published in the event schedule: the actual prize pool of CA$308,445 blew past the guarantee by better than two to one, meaning the venue's overlay obligation dissolved in the room before Day 2 opened.
Day 2 opened at 11:00 a.m. Thursday. Canada's Luke Joseph Nail entered Day 2 as the chip leader and remained inside the top three stacks through the money bubble, which broke on the 112th elimination. He carried the chip lead into the nine-handed final table late Thursday afternoon, per the WSOP.com and WSOP-X updates during the pay-out phase. From the final table Nail slipped to eighth for CA$5,300, and the deep run went instead to Proulx, who moved through the field methodically and closed out heads-up play against Marcello Iacovella, a Playground regular whose spring WSOP Circuit final tables at the same venue had included a runner-up finish of his own.

Five Canadians at the Final Table
Six of the nine players who took final-table seats late Thursday were Canadian, and five of those six converted into paid final-table finishes: Proulx, Iacovella, Pengxiang Ruan, Samuel Roussy-Majeau and Galal Tadros. Luke Nail's bust in eighth was the sole Canadian exit below fifth. The three non-Canadians at the final table were Vietnam's Ngoc Nguyen, China's Yun Liu, and China's Zhiyue Jin, all three of whom were paid but none of whom cracked the top five. The Canadian concentration is broadly consistent with Playground WSOP Circuit event history: the venue's April 2026 Main Event, won by Toronto's Allen Shen for CA$605,001, featured a similarly Canadian-heavy final table with Shen, Sebastian Crema, Weiping Gu, Renhao Zhang and Julien Cargnelutti all Canadian.
Iacovella's runner-up finish is his second Canadian WSOP Circuit deep run at Playground inside eighteen months. He was runner-up in a WSOPC Mystery Bounty event at Playground in the March 2025 season, per prior Playground WSOP International Circuit archives. The near-miss at CA$36,500 is his largest live cash on the Canadian schedule to date.
Ontario Player Pipeline Into Playground
The WSOP Super Circuit Canada is the largest live-poker draw ever hosted at Playground and the largest ever staged on Canadian soil, with CA$14 million-plus in aggregate guarantees across 18 ring events. Ontario players reaching the Kahnawake venue this week are doing so via one of three routes: a five-and-a-half-hour drive east from Toronto on Highway 401 and the Ontario-Quebec autoroute network, an Ontario-only satellite ladder run on GGPoker Ontario (the Stage 1 buy-in is CA$5, the Final Stage seat is CA$500), or direct entry using bankroll built on any of the six AGCO-registered online poker rooms (GGPoker, PokerStars on FanDuel, BetMGM Poker, 888poker, PartyPoker, Bwin). The three-stage GGPoker Ontario ladder into the CA$5,000 Main Event has been running Ontario-only since mid-June, with Sunday Final Stages that guarantee at least thirty CA$5,000 Main Event seats per week.
Whether Proulx himself is Ontario-based has not been publicly disclosed. The WSOP.com player profile lists his country simply as Canada. The Playground demographic mix for the CA$500 buy-in level typically leans heavily Quebec-based, and the francophone spelling of his given name is consistent with a Quebec origin, but no venue-level residency confirmation is available at this hour.
Series Context and Next Events
Event #2, the CA$500 NLH Mini Main Event carrying a CA$500,000 guarantee, fired its first flight on Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m. and its second at 5:00 p.m. Thursday evening while Proulx and Iacovella were playing heads-up next door. Three additional Mini Main flights run Friday (11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.) and Saturday (11:00 a.m.), with Day 2 to follow. Buy-in and structure mirror the Kickoff, with a 40,000 starting stack and late registration through Level 11.
The series highlight remains Event #7, the CA$5,000 NLH Super Circuit Main Event, which carries a CA$10,000,000 guarantee. It is the largest live-tournament guarantee ever placed on any single poker event on Canadian soil. Its starting flights run September 3 through September 6 across six Day 1s, with Day 2 opening on September 7 and the final table scheduled for September 9. The event will close approximately 24 hours before the series-closing Event #17 (CA$600 NLH Progressive Bounty) and Event #18 (CA$500 NLH Series Saver Hyper Turbo) on September 12.
What the Kickoff Field Signals for the Rest of the Series
The 731-entry Kickoff field is a materially healthy opening for the series. For historical comparison, Playground's April 2026 WSOP Circuit stop opened with a 137-entry Event #1 (CA$400 NLH Mystery Bounty), and its May 2026 stop's opening event drew 354 entries at a CA$500 buy-in. Both prior openers cleared their respective smaller CA$50,000 to CA$100,000 guarantees comfortably but did not double their overlay-avoidance figure the way this week's Kickoff did. The comparable 2025 Playground August stop opener at a similar CA$400 buy-in drew 2,289 entries across three flights, though that event was the Mini Main Event rather than the Kickoff and it played out over four Day 1s.
Read against those markers, a 731-entry Kickoff at a CA$500 buy-in in a two-flight structure is a clean opening. It suggests, but does not confirm, that the series is running above the volume Playground modelled when it published the CA$14 million aggregate guarantee earlier this year. Whether the Main Event's CA$10 million guarantee is actually threatened by real overlay risk will be knowable only after the fourth Day 1 flight on September 6.
